bird songs
Here are a few color sketches for my "Bird Songs" series. I have big plans to convert several small, vintage transistor radios into little song birds. I fell in love with these 1950's-60's radios upon first sight. Each has such a strong sense of design - each color, each line is so distinctive. They just don't make them like they used to! I felt inspired to showcase them in some way.

Perhaps the "Bird Songs" series is a commentary on the LA music industry's transformation into a relic -but like these little radios, the songs from Hollywood's heyday still sing true. Or perhaps it's just an opportunity to show off these beautifully designed, but often forgotten pieces of our collective cultural history.

LA Myth opens on February 7.

LA Myth- the virtual show
Welcome to the LA Myth virtual art show! Relive favorite opening night moments (or pretend you were there) by checking out our photos on Flickr.
Just click here:Flickr
The opening of the LA Myth show was sssooooo much fun. I was thrilled to exhibit with such a fantastic and diverse group of artists. The opening night turn-out was great. Thanks to everyone who showed up. Favorite show moments include my little cousin Jane and her new friend Elias playing hide-n-seek under that HUGE octopus stuffed animal; the two babies dancing in front of the DJ table (and learning new moves from nearby show-goers - it was so funny!); some of our new friends from Comic-con exhibiting with us and others showing up on opening night (thanks, guys!); and of course, my friends who unexpectedly made the long drive from the OC to attend the opening. It was great to see everyone!!
Online photos aren't quite as good as seeing the art in person, so if you didn't make it to opening night, never fear, the show runs through the end of the month. You still have one more week to head over to Melt Down. Hurry! :)

LA Myth - the buzz is getting louder

sneak peek

Just finished a couple of pieces for the LA Myth show. (I'm completely enamored with Tiki/island art right now. Can you tell?) And, I'm about to begin a wee little watercolor piece for a group segment of the show, called LA Represent. To find out what that's all about, you'll have to come to the show! ;) See you Saturday.
p.s. I heard that there is an official sake sponsor for opening night. That's right, free sake for everyone. Sounds like trouble...and a really good time.

walden's gallery- ooh la la!

If you've ever watched the cartoon "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" on Nick Jr, you know that Wubbzy's pal Walden is quite a character. He's Wuzzleberg's resident brainiac. And, his love of the arts leads to a tour of his extensive collection in the episode entitled "Gotta Have Art". At first glance, the paintings may look familiar. But, if you take a closer look you'll find that there is definitely something Wubbzy-ish about the paintings' subjects. These images were painted with flat colors in Illustrator and then a texture overlay was created in Photoshop to give them a painterly effect.

cell overlay - yay!

I dug a bit farther back in my portfolio and came upon this beauty. (I know you haven't seen this one, Kyle!) This was an early piece from my Master's thesis project: painted traditionally with Cell Vinyl on illustration board, with a cell OL for the FG bamboo and cattails. A lotta love went into this one. Enjoy. :)
